Project 9 Portfolio

Portfolio (scribd.com):

Project Corrections / Time spent:

Event Ad/13 minutes – I just changed the fonts and then rearranged some of the text.

Logo/27 minutes – I had to completely start over on this project because I lost the original file. I changed the fonts so they would be contrasting. I used the rotate tool this time to create an even clock.

Brochure/16 minutes – I changed the paragraph styles so there would be less space between paragraphs. I also made changes to some of the sub headings. I made sure the images weren’t pixelated.

Montage/12 minutes – I used the layer mask and brush tool to bring more of the image back. So the hands were more visible so that it had more of a montage feel to it. I moved the fonts slightly.

Stationery/14 minutes – I wanted to create more unity between the business card so I used the pen tool to make a shape on the margin. It was black and curved to match the card style. I moved the logo and made changes to the text.

Business Card/7 minutes – I made changes to the text and moved it slightly. I also moved the subheading on the front of the card to the white side.

Photodesign/34 minutes – I had to make a lot of changes. I changed the fonts and positions. I also had to change the colors to match the color wheel more accurately. I created new shape boxes for the margin for a different style.

Message:

I wanted to communicate a clean and professional style of design.
Audience:

Future employers
Top Thing Learned:

How to use the master pages was new and extremely helpful.
Future application of Visual Media:

I can now use this to design ads and even Christmas cards if I wanted. I learned useful photography skills. I also think that it will be helpful to know how to use Microsoft Word if I don’t have access to any Adobe programs.

Video Showcase:

Description: A two sided folding brochure with a gate style fold.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I started by designing the curved flag across both sides. I didn’t want to use a cheesy color so instead I went online and found a really good image of an Italian flag with I then used the pathfinder tool to cut out the sections that I wanted to use.

I then designed the logo in Adobe Illustrator by tracing Z shapes around a hexagon shape. I changed the stroke shape and style to give it more character. I used the logo in the title and also throughout the brochure as a watermark.

I found a series of images that matched my color scheme and message of the brochure and organized them throughout the layout. I edited the chef photo and the bread with pesto photo in Photoshop. Then I used a text wrap around those two images.

Message: Italian food can be an experience rather than just a meal.

Audience: Anyone who likes to eat so… everyone. This could also be catered toward middle-class families because of the affordable prices for fantastic food.

Top Thing Learned: Learning how to text wrap was a very useful skill that I developed for this project. I enjoyed editing the image in Photoshop to get the exact part of the photo that I wanted to use. Then wrapping the text around it made it look much more professional and fun to read.

Project 7 Web Page

P7SethCravenScreenshot

Description: This is a web page to describe the process I used in creating the ‘Phoenix Publishing’ logo. We learned how to format the web page using html and css.

Process: First we established the code for the html. This included all the changes made to the text itself and the images placed within the web page. The rest of the design elements were created using css. I used a border and an outline using colors taken from the logo itself. I used the photoshop eyedropper tool to get the right codes. I established a background color and image and made sure the margins and padding was accurate. I put background colors on the text to provide more flavor to the design.

Message: The message I wanted to convey was that I can create a clean and effective web page. It also communicated my ability to utilize other design elements.

Audience: Potential employers that are looking for people with a basic knowledge of web design and coding.

Top Thing Learned: Everything was new to me with this project so I learned so much! I think the top thing I learned was the simplicity of using css. With only a few codes we can modify the page and make it look good rather than basic. I also liked the principle of an external link so that you can have two separate documents and modify them whenever you need to.

Color Scheme and Color Hexs: Triadic color scheme. Black:#000, White: #FFF, Yellow: #F8E928, Red: #E21E2B, Blue: #1E53A5, Lighter Blue: #cce5ff

Title Font Family and Category: Verdana or arial,  sans-serif

Copy Font Family and Category: Times New Roman or Cambria, serif

Changes made to the css: I added a list background with proper padding. I centered the logo using padding. All the colors were changed based on the logo. I added a border and an outline to the text. Added a background image and repeated it vertically.

Word Count: 252

Business Card (large layout):

business card large

Description: Design a stationery and a business card for a company. Create the logo in Adobe Illustrator and finish the rest of the project in Adobe InDesign.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills): I used basic typography to write out the title in contrasting fonts. Then I designed the feather using the pen tool and chose a tertiary color scheme for the project. After I pieced the logo together I modified the ‘x’ to curve into the feather pen tip. I used basic tools like the shape tool to create the rest of the project in InDesign. I chose a phoenix picture online and made it really transparent for a watermark.

Message: Books will always be a part of our society. Whether they’re published online or in print, the demand for new stories will always exist.

Audience: Authors and Book Stores

Top Thing Learned: The most useful thing I learned was how to manage a folder in InDesign so that everything can stay together. I liked having one spot to go to for all the different aspects of the project rather than searching through a bunch of files.

Color scheme and color names: Tertiary – blue, red and yellow

Project 5 Logos

SethCraven-P5Logos

Description: Design a logo for a company using Adobe Illustrator. Use three different color schemes for the same logo – color, grayscale, and white with a color background.

Process: I used the box tool to create all of the shapes on the logo. The hash marks of the clock, the hands of the clock, the arrows, and the circle in the middle were all using that shape tool. Then I chose different fonts for the text and lined it up with the little hand on the clock. I had to use the anchor tool to modify the ‘t’ slightly.

Message: This is an advertising company that helps companies get recognized by the public. The main message is that it will cost money to produce advertisements but you will make money based on the time the public views the ads.

Audience: Big companies or corporations that need more publicity.

Top Thing Learned: I learned that it’s important for logos to be simple so they communicate a clear message. It’s easy to over-complicate the design because I wanted to add a lot of elements that I thought would look cool. In the end, I feel like less is more.

Color Scheme and Names: Analogous – Teal, Green, and Lime

Project 4 Montage

SethCraven-P4Montage-Train

Description: Create a spiritual montage poster using Photoshop. I chose a that phrase from the LDS hymn book because it’s one of my favorite songs.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing): This project really focused on using layer masks to blend images together effectively. I started out with the background image of the ocean and clouds, with a lighthouse on the side. I didn’t like the way the lighthouse looked so I placed in a different image and blended it in. The only other picture I placed was the father holding his daughter’s hand. After all the images were formed together the way I wanted, I edited the levels, saturation, and color of the poster. I used several effects on the typography as well.

Message: God loves us and is always reaching out to us regardless of mistakes we’ve made. A father will always love his child. In a father’s eyes, we’ll always be a beautiful child. I also tried to apply some deeper symbolism to the message like Christ reaching into the water to save a drowning Simon Peter.

Audience: Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, focusing on parents. More specifically, this idea was inspired because of my grandma so I designed it with her in mind as my target audience.

Top Thing Learned: The simple effect of blending images together can form a professional looking advertisement. It’s a simple principle that will be highly useful in a career field. I also learned how to change the typography to make it look more professional.

Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied: I used the selection tool to highlight the ocean and increased the color in cyan, magenta, and blue. I did the same thing to the sky but I did the opposite colors to fade out the blue and purple colors. I decreased the saturation slightly for the entire image and increased the vibrance. I sharpened the lighthouse slightly and the father’s hand.

Color scheme and color names: Originally I was planning on analogous with blue, however, the hands had enough orange in them to make it a faded complimentary color scheme. Blue and orange colors.

Project 3 Photodesign

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Description: I designed this as a promotional ad for the Indiana basketball team, the Pacers. It also doubles as an ad for Pacers hats.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Focus Principles): This project was completed in Photoshop using a picture that I took of my roommate wearing his favorite hat. I learned how to use quick selection tool the most as I transported different images and altered the colors of specific areas. I changed the levels and vibrance of the original photo and enhanced his eye color. I decided to use a complimentary color scheme of indigo and gold to best represent this basketball team. I used alignment and repetition with the rectangles on the side to draw attention to the text.

Message: The Pacers are awesome and their clothes make us feel like a part of the team.

Audience: Indiana Pacer fans.

Top Thing Learned: The importance of taking a good photo. Too late into the project I realized that I could really save myself a lot of work and editing if I start out with a good quality image. If the original photo looks good then it will only make the end product look even better.

Color Scheme and Color Names: Complimentary – Indigo and Gold.

My experience with photography is limited so it was difficult for me to take effective pictures. The hardest part was trying to find things that would create a good visual on my own. It was rewarding when I got the final image and I was happy with it.

Photoshop was also a new experience but I enjoyed using that program. It was fun to change the saturation and color contrasts to create a higher quality photograph. I loved being able to improve the original picture into something that looked more professional.

Project 2 Event Ad

P2 SethCraven

Description: This is an event sponsored by Xbox for the Action Against Hunger Foundation. The event is a world-wide tournament for all the best Halo players competing for the title of Halo Champion. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of hunger around the world and donate all the funds to make a difference.

Process:loved using Word to design this ad. I started by scanning an image from a Halo video game and sizing it and cropping it to fill the page. Using the dropper in the color tool bar was useful when trying pull colors directly from the image. I couldn’t change the text transparency of the word ‘Hunger’ so I copied the image again, resized it, faded the image, and placed it over the word to make it seem like the text was faded.

Message: Helping solve the world’s problems can be an entertaining event. Help people feel like part of the solution, while still doing the things they love.

Audience: Younger adults and gaming fanatics.

Color Scheme and Color Names: Blue Analogous. The orange mask on the image could technically make the color scheme complimentary with blue and orange.

Top Thing Learned: Using publishing layout and all the tools to edit an image. It felt very applicable and useful as I prepare for a future career.

Project 1 Flier

Seth-Craven-InDesign-Flier

Description: This is a flier advertising the Graduate Leadership Conference.

Process: I worked with InDesign to create this advertisement. This was my first time working with this program so I relied heavily on the box tool to create the shapes that repeat throughout the design. I’d form a circle, copy and paste it, and resize it to be a little larger to implement a good rhythm and repetition. I kept the text inside the larger circle to  add unity to the piece.

Message: Graduation will be fun but the next step will be entering the professional world. This is an opportunity to get ahead and it’ll be an entertaining and educational conference.

Audience: The target audience is seniors in college because this flier would be most applicable to them. That usually includes an age range from about 24 to 30 years old. As a current college student, I felt like I could relate better to this audience. If I was graduating, I’d be sick of school and I’d probably try to avoid boring events. If the flier looked like a library ad, I’d pass right by it. However, if it looked like a unique design and seemed like an entertainment event, I’d be more likely to attend.

Top Thing Learned: The amount of effort and planning that goes into a simple design. Organizing my thoughts and transforming them into reality was a process that was more difficult than I anticipated. I learned that knowing the message and audience greatly enhanced my ability to create a design that I was pleased with.
